Flying Start - Academic Skills: Welcome

Get a Flying Start

Blank notebook and glasses imageIt's nearly time!

Want to make sure your academic skills are as sharp as possible before you begin your course?  Like to brush up on a few things to feel a bit more confident?  Feel like this is all going to be brand new to you?  You've come to the right place!

On this page we have provided links to things you may find useful as you prepare to start your course at Staffs.  We have online resources that you can use to explore what we mean by academic skills, information on how our team can help you to develop these and details of some of our workshops.  You'll also find details on early academic skills sessions that are being run to help you to make the transition to university study, and links to book onto one of these if you'd like to come along.

If you'd like to talk to someone about academic skills, either now or when you're on your course, just get in touch!

We have lots of online resources you can access before you arrive and at any point during your course.  Check out the drop-down menus under 'I need help with...' on our Library Resources page.

New students may find our resources on Note Taking, Academic Writing and Gaining a Good Degree particularly useful.

Academic Skills Tutors

We have a whole team of Academic Skills Tutors who can help you to develop and enhance your skills.  We can advise you on research skills, academic writing, referencing, digital skills, critical analysis, presentations, exams and more.

We can offer support if you're learning new skills or need to improve in some areas of your work, and we can also offer advice if you're doing well but want to aim for the very top marks.  We offer individual appointments (including via phone/Skype), drop-ins and workshops.

Take a look at our Library Resources page to get a better idea of all the help available to you from the team.

Pre-arrival academic skills sessions
