I want to borrow some books

This is the key information you need to know about borrowing from the University Library:

  • Most students can borrow up to 17 items at any one time.
  • Most material has an initial loan period of 2 weeks but all books will be automatically renewed unless reserved by another student or you have an overdue item out.  An individual book can be loaned for a maximum of 6 months before you have to return it.
  • Library recall charges will only occur if you do not return a book after it has been reserved by another student, or at the end of the 6 month loan period.
  • High demand texts will have a ‘Not for Loan’ copy for use within the library.
  • Distance learners can have up to four books posted out to them.

How to take out and return books

self service machine in libraryWhen you have found what you are looking for, take the items to one of our self-service machines. Self-service machines are found near to the Customer Services desk in all our Libraries and in the larger Thompson Library in the Core and Main collections as well. If you need help, please ask a member of staff.

The initial loan period for all books is two weeks, however, books will automatically renew unless they have been requested by someone or you have had them out for 24 weeks.

If one of your items is requested, you will receive an email to your student account and you must return it by the date shown.
Items with more than one request will be reduced to an initial one week loan.

If you have reached your maximum borrowing entitlement, you won't be able to borrow anything else until you have returned some items.

When returning items scan the barcode on the self-service machine and follow the instructions to place them in either the red or green book return slot.

Requesting books

If you would like to borrow a book which is on loan to another user then you can put a request in for this.  This is known within the Library Search as 'Place a hold'.

Follow these steps :place hold screenshot

  1. Locate the book you want to borrow, then click on the Place a Hold link.
  2. If need be you will be prompted to log into your Library account first
  3. Select which Library you would like to collect the book from. Click the Confirm Hold button
  4. Once the book is ready for you to collect you will receive an email to your University account, so check this regularly so you don't miss the notification.
  5. Come to the Library you selected when placing the hold and pick up the book from the reservations shelf.

The first time you request a book you might find it easier to collect it during staffed hours, so there is someone there to help you if you are not able to locate your book on the shelf!
