About journals

Journals can provide up to date, specialised information on topics which are not always found in books.  Issued at regular intervals there are 3 types

  • Scholarly: articles written by research or subject experts and usually peer reviewed
  • Trade and Professional: relate industry or profession, reviews of products services
  • Magazines: entertainment,  2nd 3rd hand information by freelancers

Online databases

Many journal articles are available online via online databases which allows you to search for keywords and concepts across a range of journals in particular subject areas. Most allow you to use particular search techniques so that your search is more focused. Below you will see a list of the main online database for education. Above, you will see a search box for Summon which is a search engine that finds books, ebooks, journal articles, across a range of subjects and a link to Google scholar which also list journal articles. Can't find the journal article that you are looking for?

Sometimes when doing research you come across an article in a journal that you are unable to access.  This is usually because the Library does not subscribe to that title.  In these cases, you can opt to use our Document Delivery Service.
