How to find the resources you need

You can search for a wide range of library resources such as books, ebooks and ejournals through the Library Search facility on the Finding Resources page.   Enter your search term in the box and select Search. This will search for both print and electronic resources that match your search term.  You can then limit your results to eBooks and online articles by selecting Available Online.

Look out across our pages for the Library Search box with the 'binocular man' image as shown below!

Reading lists online

Check your reading lists. Most modules have a reading list to support your studies with essential and recommended books and articles. Check your module through reading lists online - you can search by your module title, module code or the name of your module leader.  Reading lists provide links to books and articles you can read through the library, online or in print.  You may also see links to online journals and web sites recommended by your lecturers.

Locating printed books

There are three steps to locating a book within the library:

  1. Carry out a library search:  Start from the Library Search page and enter your search term. Select to search Print Only.

  2. Find the book you want in the results list

  3. Check the book's call number and location, and if it is available:  Make a note of the title, author and call number/class mark, and which collection the book is stored in.example of print book showing location

The call number (or classmark) tells you exactly where the item will be located on the shelves. Each book has a call number on its spine.

  4. Locate the book on the shelves:  Use library signage to find your way around the Library to locate the shelf where the book you want is located. Each block of shelves tells you the numbers stored on that shelf.  For example, if you were searching for call number 507.11, start by locating the 500s, then narrow your search to the 507s and so on.  You will also find that the spine label has the first three letters of the author's family name.  So for the book above it would be 507.11ALL.
