Open Badges: Welcome

How OpenBadges work

What are OpenBadges?

The idea of a digital badge is that it is :

an online representation of a skill you’ve earned

OpenBadges take that idea further allowing these skills to be verified through a credible organisation.  OpenBadges have metadata embedded within the badge image which describes what the badge was awared for and who awarded it. They are therefore recognised as being more useful and authorative.

OpenBadges can capture learning wherever and however it happens - so you can get recognition for acheivements, skills and competencies you have developed through activities other than your degree course.

Once you have earned your badges you can share them with the world through your Mozilla backpack - and then link to these from your Staffordshire Graduate ePortfolio.

How are we using OpenBadges?

The Academic Skills team are awarding OpenBadges in connection with a number of our events and workshops.  So if you successfully complete the activity required to earn the badge then we will issue this to you and you can add it to your Mozilla backpack.

Many of the skills covered by our workshops are part of the Staffordshire Graduate Attribute of Life Long Learning, in particular to be:

  • "technologically, digitally and information literate"

The badges we issue will allow you to demonstrate that you have developed knowledge and skills in this area to complement those which are part of your degree.

We are offering some badges as part of the Get a Better Grade workshops.

Look out for more information on badges we are offering later in the semester.
