Our books and journals

Finding and using Journals

As a student in higher education, your tutors will be looking for evidence that you have used a wide range of quality resources in your studies. Journals can provide up to date, specialised information on topics which are not always found in books. They are issued at regular intervals and there are 3 types:

  • Scholarly: articles written by research or subject experts and peer reviewed
  • Trade and Professional: relate to an industry or profession, reviews of products/services
  • Magazines: entertainment,  second and third hand information by freelancers

The vast majority of our journals are available online (eJournals).  You can find electronic journal articles via the Library Search  or to see if we subscribe to a journal electronically go to journals by title

Print journals

Print journals are classified as above, but we have a smaller reference only collection of print journals in our libraries.

You can search which journals are available in print via the Journal title search on the Library search page.

Getting items the Library does not stock

Sometimes when carrying out research you may find an item that you are unable to access. For example, a journal article, report, book or conference proceedings.

In these cases you can opt to use our Document Delivery Service. This is a free service, but first you need to register for a British Library Online Account. Electronic items such as eJournal articles can be delivered directly to your registered email address.
