As Staff and Students of the University we all expect Information and IT systems to be available and reliable. As we are all users of Information we all have a duty to protect that information. Make sure that your follow guidance act swiftly if you suspect that information or IT systems have been breached. Taking action can not only protect the University but also your own personal Information such as Banking details or Social networking logins, a social networking post can make or break a future career decision.
  1. Never presume 'It won't happen to me'. Realize that you are an attractive target to hackers.

  2. Protect yourself with a strong password and never share password information with anyone. If you struggle to remember passwords use a password locker such as Roboform which is free to staff and students. https://www.roboform.com/promotions/college

  3. Always protect your device. Make sure that you always know where your laptop, mobile phone or tablet are and ensure that they can not be stolen or tampered with.

  4. Avoid clicking links if you are unsure of their origin. Links can be in emails or on websites and can contain programs designed to harm either yourself or the university.

  5. Be careful with your information, it's valuable to hackers. Always make sure that you complete transactions such as banking on a known Laptop, phone or table. Make sure that you are connected to a secure Internet connection, Public WiFi, such as Cafe's, can be setup to steal your information.

  6. Install protective software. Sophos is available to all Staff and Students via the university website free of charge. This software will scan your computer for known viruses and malware.

  7. Be careful what you connect. USB sticks can contain viruses and are often 'planted' by hackers. Mobile phones are now being modified to include malicious programs designed to cause harm. If you don't know where it's from don't plug it in.

  8. Be wary of Social Engineering, people calling asking for personal information will probably be aiming to gain access to bank accounts or similar. 

  9. Don't over share. Social networking is routinely used by hackers to gain insights into  your life, they can use this information to guess passwords or understand where you will be at certain times.

  10. Understand your accounts. Get to know what's normal with your accounts, when you normally receive email updates, what login pages look like. With this information you can be aware of any attacks on your accounts and take action swiftly by changing passwords and informing the account operator.
