ITEM 1: The Burslem Endowed School Minute Book 1872Bennett attended the Burslem Endowed School, housed in the Wedgwood Institute, between 1877 and 1880. The examination results here show steady progress from 7th position in Form III to 1st in Form V. Bennett was dismissive of his school days and in ‘How I was Educated’ (1930) pronounced this one ‘hardly worth mentioning’. The Burslem Endowed School does, however, feature both in comic novel The Card and in what is widely regarded as his masterpiece, The Old Wives’ Tale. Bennett, who was punctual to a fault throughout his adult life, also conceded that school taught him how to ‘keep to a time-table’ and the Minute Book shows that young ‘Enoch’ was late only once during this period.
