Updating a device and applications

Keeping your device and its applications up to date are an essential part of maintaining your device. Not only does it provide new features it also provides fixes (known as bugs) to any issues, ensures that it is running at optimal performance and more importantly ensuring that the security remains secure to keep your personal data safe. Please note that you will be required to have a stable internet connection while performing updates. 

How to Update a Windows Device

Be sure to turn your computer off regularly, as some updates will download upon the device shutting down. This also gives the device time to reset the system to ensure that everything is working correctly. To do this, navigate to the start button in the bottom left and hold shift and press the “Shut Down” button. Then feel free to restart your device. 

To update your device:

  1. Open Settings:
    1. Click on the Start menu and select Settings (the gear icon).
  2. Go to Update & Security:
    1.  Select Update & Security from the settings menu.
  3. Check for Updates:
    1. Click on Windows Update and then click Check for updates.
    2. If updates are available, they will start downloading automatically.
  4. Install Updates:
  5. Once downloaded, follow the prompts to install the updates. You may need to restart your computer to complete the installation.

Updating a MacOS Device

Be sure to turn your computer off regularly, as some updates will download upon the device shutting down. This also gives the device time to reset the system to ensure that everything is working correctly.

  1. Open System Preferences:
    1. Click the Apple logo in the top left corner of the screen and select System Preferences.
  2. Go to Software Update:
    1. Click on Software Update. Your Mac will check for available updates.
  3. Install Updates:
    1. If updates are found, click Update Now to install them. You may need to enter your administrator password.
  4. Restart your Mac if prompted.

Updating an Android Device

Open Settings:

  1. Tap the Settings app on your device.
    1. Navigate to System:
  2. Scroll down and select System or About phone (the name may vary).
  3. Check for Updates:
    1. Tap Software update or System updates.
    2. Select Check for updates.
    3. Install Updates:
  4.  If an update is available, follow the on-screen instructions to download and install it. You may need to restart your device.

Updating iOS Devices (iPhone/iPad)

Open Settings: 

  1. Tap the Settings app on your device.
  2. Select General and then tap Software Update.
  3. Check for Updates:
    1. Your device will check for available updates.
    2. Install Updates:
    3.  If an update is available, tap Download and Install. You may need to enter your passcode and agree to terms and conditions.
  4. Restart your device if prompted.

Troubleshooting Common Update Issues

  • Check Internet Connection: Ensure your device is connected to the internet. A stable connection is required for downloading updates.
  • Insufficient Storage: Make sure you have enough storage space on your device. If your device is low on storage, consider deleting unnecessary files or apps.
  • Restart the Device: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve issues with the update process.
  • Error Messages: If you encounter specific error messages, take note of them and refer to the manufacturer’s support website for guidance.
