Generative AI and Personal Communications

The inclusion of generative AI in assignments must adhere to Staffordshire University guidelines. It's your responsibility to check the assignment brief to ensure that the use of AI tools is permitted.

Any use of AI tools, including generating ideas, content, or assisting in assignment planning, must be acknowledged as a source. Guidelines below outline how to reference text-based AI use in assignments.

Due to the rapid evolution of the AI landscape, these instructions might change in the near future.

Depending on the AI used, you may or may not be able to generate a shareable link for the AI output. If a shareable link is possible, it is recommended to include it.

Referencing AI material

Cite Them Rright Online: Generative AI and Personal Communications

  • When referencing external works and materials created by Generative AI in academic work, treat it like any other publicly available source, following the appropriate citation style (e.g., Harvard, APA, MLA).
  • For Personal Communications, like private conversations or emails, which aren't publicly accessible, include them internally,  in an appendix. Offer details like the date of the communication, medium used, and context within the assignment.

The Report Library Guide provides guidelines on creating Appendices.
