AI and Generative AI

Generative AI

"Generative AI refers to deep-learning models that can generate high-quality text, images, and other content based on the data they were trained on." (IBM, 2023)

Large Language Models (LLMs) are a type of AI which mimics human paterns of speech. They are designed to study language data and to replicate it. Whilst different models have different approaches to tone and appear conversational it is important to remember that they are only as good as the data they have been trained on and so errors can and will occur.

Simply put Generative AI helps you to create a new item of media such as an image or text. Presenting the output of a Generative AI tool as your own would be a break in academic honesty, as you have not been part of the creation of that item and so are not evidencing your own learning.

You can use these tools to support your learning process but do be careful to use them correctly. Consider how much of the output is originally your own work or that of the AI tool.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-Trained Text model) is an example of AI designed to converse with humans. ChatGPT is an example of a Large Language Model (LLM) which has been trained on the internet to respond to input. The model is not able to select fact from fiction and simply places the next most common word after one another, similar to that of a phones suggestion of which word you would like next.

What is Bard (Gemini) and Bing Chat (Copilot)

Both Google and Bing have both started developing their own AI to work in a similar style as ChatGPT. However the main difference, is that both Google Gemini and Bing Copilot are connected to search engines respectively.

This means that either AI will now prompt search results from their search engine as well as providing text based responses. While it can provide useful information and/or links to sources, it is wise to continue to fact check the information it provides as it does not tell fact from fiction.
