In 2014 our dear friend and colleague Kathleen Morgan died following a long fight with cancer. She was an amazing person and a wonderful librarian and we honour her memory each year by awarding a prize in her name: Kathleen’s Prize.

Kathleen first joined the University Library in November 1992 and she retired due to ill health in November 2012. During the several roles she filled while working at Staffordshire University her passion to help students realise their potential shone out. She was especially interested in supporting students’ transition to University level research.

Reflecting and remembering this passion, in her memory we have created a prize which rewards research excellence in first year undergraduate work. The prize was first awarded in March 2016 and is given to the nominated first year student who submits the best researched piece of first semester work.

Every year, tutors who mark any Semester One Level 3 or Level 4 work have the opportunity to submit an outstanding example of work to the Library awarding panel headed by Paul Mahoney, Alison Pope and Julie Adams.

This year the prizes were awarded in a special informal ceremony held in The Catalyst complete with tea and cakes - just as Kathleen herself would have enjoyed.

This year’s results:

Winner:
Sam Powell (HSW) nominated by Stan Mills
It is especially poignant that the winning work this year focused on the treatment of breast cancer. Kathleen’s family is still heavily involved in the awarding of the prize and this will touch them deeply.

Sam received a certificate indicating their outstanding work plus an Amazon voucher for £75.

Runners up (in no order):

  • Steph Hassall (HSW) nominated by Barbara Edwards
  • Hannah Kettle (IoE) nominated by Manda Tayler
  • Ellis Corfield Smith (HSW) nominated by Jayne Evans
  • Ebenezer Okyere (HSW) nominated by Nick Brown
  • Michael Blakeley (HSW) nominated by Ben Woodrow-Hirst
  • Laura Lee (HSW) nominated by Mandy Gunter

All runners up received a certificate recognising their achievement.
