About Referencing

The purpose of referencing, is to provide proper credit and acknowledgement to the authors and various sources of information, their ideas and to any of their work that you have used or referred to in your own writing.

Referencing serves several important purposes:

  1. Credibility and Trustworthiness: Properly referencing your sources lends credibility and trustworthiness to your work. It shows that you have conducted thorough research and have based your arguments and claims on reliable sources.

  2. Avoiding Plagiarism: Referencing prevents plagiarism, which is the act of using someone else's work, ideas, or words without giving them appropriate credit. Plagiarism is considered unethical and can lead to serious consequences in academic, professional, and creative contexts.

  3. Supporting Claims and Arguments: When you reference reputable sources, you provide evidence to support the claims and arguments you make in your writing. This enhances the validity and persuasiveness of your work.

  4. Further Reading: References allow readers to explore the topic further by providing them with a list of sources you've used. This helps interested readers delve deeper into the subject matter.

  5. Acknowledging Intellectual Property: Referencing respects the intellectual property rights of others. By attributing ideas and work to their original creators, you acknowledge their contributions and respect their ownership.

  6. Building on Existing Knowledge: Referencing shows that you are building on the existing body of knowledge in your field. It demonstrates your awareness of previous research and contributions.

  7. Academic Integrity: Proper referencing is a fundamental aspect of academic integrity. It demonstrates your commitment to ethical writing practices and upholds the standards of academic institutions.

  8. Avoiding Legal Issues: Plagiarism and unauthorised use of copyrighted material can lead to legal issues. Proper referencing helps you avoid these problems by clearly delineating what content is your own and what is borrowed.

In academic, professional, and creative writing, referencing is a critical skill that ensures the responsible and ethical use of information while contributing to the ongoing discourse and advancement of knowledge.
